The entire nation watched Super Bowl XLIV as the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints played the final game of the football season. While almost the entire nation watched this matchup, the memory of Katrina still filled the air.
Many comments were made concerning how New Orleans had survived the devastation of Katrina and was now demonstrating to the world the resiliency of a people who vowed to rebuild. One could not help but to draw a parallel between New Orleans and the devastation that Haiti is still dealing with.
While it may have been just a Super Bowl to some, the crowds, the celebration, the parties, the cheers and yes the victory represented, “Weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning.” In one situation we can celebrate and on the other we must participate in renewing, restoring, and rebuilding the hope of a people who are still dealing with so much.
So let us not forget that Haiti still needs us, and yes even New Orleans; because while the material things can be restored the memories of those who survived still bear witness to death, destruction and devastation. This was more than just a victory for the Saints-- it was hope given to Haiti.
