What's Really Important?

A recent article* in The New York Times indicates the vast majority of the religious community has no idea as to what they really believe in or stand for.  The survey suggests that many are clueless to why they ascribe to the various beliefs that they promote. What I found interesting about the survey as it relates to some of the questions is that the questions that were asked were not questions the general population would have the answer to anyway.  It appears to me that the questions were posed to seminary students or others seeking deeper understanding relative to denominational polity, history and/or origin.

The vast majority of persons who attend a house of worship are those who are simply seeking a word of encouragement, hope, and assurance.  As a pastor, I reserve the teaching moment for bible study classes.  It is no secret that these classes are not as well attended as Worship Service.  Nevertheless, this does not negate the fact that people who find themselves facing trial tragedy and tribulation are able to hold on one more day because of the word they have received.  Furthermore, we all know that a survey can be manipulated depending upon the type or types of questions asked.

So then, the question remains, what’s more important? That I know that Martin Luther was the founder of the protestant movement, or that I am to do my neighbor no harm and to love him or her as myself?

Peace & Love,

Pastor M
