Cascade United Methodist Church puts on Shoes to Walk in the
2006 Wesley Walk “All God’s Children Got Shoes!”
Atlanta, GA (September 27, 2006). Walking to support the needs of others will be the order of the day for the Wesley Community Centers, Inc. on Saturday, October 28th, at 7:30 a.m. at Stone Mountain Park. Brian Jordan from the Atlanta Braves will be the Grand Marshall for the day. “Giving Feet to the Faith of the Church” is the project that calls on churches throughout the Atlanta community to participate in the “Walk” in order to raise money for the projects of the Center.
Pastor Marvin A. Moss, Senior Pastor at Cascade United Methodist Church, has pledged the full support of the church’s ministries to ensure the success of the 2006 Wesley Walk. Founded in 1902, the Wesley Community Centers, Inc., has been associated with the United Methodist Church in Atlanta for more than 100 years. Cascade UMC has been a part of this program for more than twelve years. “I expect to turn out our congregation in great force – especially our youth. All God’s children got shoes and we plan to use these shoes to walk for service to our sisters and brothers,” said Pastor Moss.
The Wesley Centers offer caring and compassionate services in Atlanta neighborhoods that have special needs. The organization partners with local organizations, churches, and residents to provide a broader base of service. The “Wesley Walk for Others” supports three projects – the Bethlehem Community Center, Camp Wesley for inner-city children, and Project Extend, a home repair service for senior citizens.
The Bethlehem Senior Center is a day center in southeast Atlanta, helping to meet the needs of senior citizens in the area. Monday through Friday, a hot meal is served in the middle of the day. The center also offers health screening, crafts classes, Tai Chi, Bible study and fellowship. The seniors go on field trips and participate in various community activities. Camp Wesley is a residential summer came that serves about 200 campers each year. The children and youth who attend the camp are referred by DFAC, probation officers, and other social service agencies. Over 97% of the campers attend on Camperships, since financial assistance is necessary to make it possible for them to attend camp.
Camp sessions are five-ten days in length, depending on the age and needs of the children and youth.
Project Extend does home repairs for low income seniors citizens and handicapped persons. The goal of this ministry is to keep individuals in their own homes and independent for as long as possible. Volunteer workers improve the quality of live for these senior citizens by doing everything from painting and yard work, to building handicap ramps and replacing roofs.
Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts raising $25 or more for the cause can earn a Wesley Walk Patch. Individual walkers who raise the most money, as well as the Pastor whose church raises the most money in the United Methodist Conference will receive two free Air Tran tickets.
